Fantastic experience: It’s taken me over 25yrs to learn how to drive so finding the right instructor was a big thing for me. And safe to say Richie was the man. Fantastic experience learning from him, took the time to go over every little detail and run through every scenario. Calm at all times which was great for me. An absolute top fella too. Couldn’t recommend him highly enough.

Fantastic experience: A week before his 18th birthday, my son passed his driving test. It was a complex 18 month process, but Richie eased many tensions, remaining kind and patient. My son related well to Richie and his instructions. The final push before his second test which involved several 2 hour lessons (one on the day of the test) made all the difference. Having a third driver in our home has had a very positive impact on our lives and boosted Cian's independence and confidence. In two years time I will be contacting Richie for my second son. Negative experience: I was referred to Richie not long before my test, he promised me that he'd do pretest and a few lessons and that I could rent his car for my test. He then got struck down with some illness or another. He promised me for the next week and then tells me he needed an operation, it was the last minute before my test, I then found out that he has done this to many people and still is doing this. I won't be recommending him to anyone as I believe he is unreliable and dishonest.

Negative experience: I paid Richie in full at the end of February. I begin lesson early March, and had 1 or 2 lessons before the pandemic began which of course is no one's fault. I then had one more lesson in June. For another lesson I was left waiting around, with no show - Richie was experiencing 'personal issues' and so lessons came to a halt (again understandable). There was no talk of lessons again until about September/early October. I was left with no replies and only received a reply when I again had to text first - I received no lessons during this period. I contacted again in feb 2021, no reply - I then texted again in September 2021, received a reply that he was booked until October I said that was fine. Waited till October, texted again - no reply. Texted two weeks later, promised lessons however nothing was confirmed only that "he would let me know". I finally contacted consumer affairs after being given the run around for MONTHS and was advised of my rights for a refund. After asking Richie for this, he agreed however did not refund until over a week later when I contacted him again to explain I would have to go forward with the small claims court if no refund was received. During this text exchange I was told that he had other students who had booked ahead of me which he can't cancel to accommodate me (?). I have tried to book lessons for several months, I never once suggested I should be put ahead of other students to facilate this. During this time, I noticed posts on Facebook advertising for NEW students whilst I sat and waited for a reply for my already paid lessons. Not excluding the fact that on several occasions he texted during lessons as well as taking phone calls. Overall very unprofessional - I was a working student at the time and a few hundred euros wasn't easy for me to come by. I shouldn't have to beg for a service I paid for. I don't normally like to post such negatives reviews, however if it prevents this from happening to anyone else I will be happy.

Negative experience: Be careful and think twice before you decide to pay for lessons as a whole! No responsibility to keep up with the schedule and never refunded my money as he promised. Richie didn’t keep up with my schedule as promised, and he would give one lesson and delay me for weeks in between due to personal reasons. The thing is, he wouldn’t reply to my text and call when I tried to ask when he could come back. I paid upfront in January 2020 and was supposed to finish all lessons by July 2020, but up to November 2020, I still have five lessons left. He clearly had no commitment as I already paid everything upfront. The last time he delayed, I took encouragement to confront him that I wasn’t happy. He said he would refund me for the remaining lessons. But I waited for weeks, calling him and texting him yet no replied; he responded saying my Iban doesn’t work, and that's it, I NEVER RECEIVED MY REFUND. It’s not my nature to leave a bad review for small businesses, but I thought I should shed light on this situation, and I hope you all be careful with this service provider especially, if you’re a woman like me.

Fantastic experience: I started lessons with Richie last year when I couldn't even get the car moving! After all the various lockdowns and even after we completed all the EDT lessons he kept in touch with me until I got a test date and saw me through with advice and early morning pre tests until I passed. He is extremely knowledgeable and experienced about all elements of driving and the test and a really good coach, who gives you patience when you need it but also a push when you need that too! If you want more than just lessons and you want someone to see you through from beginning to passing the test Richie is your man!

Negative experience: Not a bad driving instructor who has helped many pass their test but also not one I’d recommend if you’re a nervous driver or anxious about taking to the roads for the first time. He is, oddly enough, not very sympathetic towards beginners and can be quite blunt. Be prepared to be told “it’s obvious you haven’t practiced” and “you’re not listening” when you make mistakes. I’ve been in the car with him as he honked at other L and N drivers. If positive encouragement is what you’re looking for I can recommend Trisha’s School of Motoring (also based in Kilcoole) who I went to for the second half of my lessons.
